Meet the Artist: Doug Wright
Doug Wright lives in Palm Harbor, Florida but hails from Upstate New York where he developed a passion for drawing as a young child. Doug began his artistic career by airbrushing T-shirts in shops around town and soon was commissioned to work on various design and illustration projects. After years of creating digital art, he was introduced to sidewalk chalk art festivals. The physical act of creating temporary artwork reignited his love for traditional media. He now spends much of his time making art with pencils, pens, paints and brushes. What’s old is new again!
About the WMNF Shirt Design
I was thrilled when I saw the Call for Artists to submit shirt graphics to be used in this year’s fund drives. I discovered the station nearly 40 years ago and it’s been a huge part of my life. I have always been drawn to the Art Nouveau style of the music posters from the 60’s and 70’s and employed it to suggest a vintage T-shirt graphic. The image of butterfly wings symbolizes changing times while the radio tower recalls logos from WMNF’s past. The color scheme and water splash represent the station’s long-standing commitment to environmental issues. I chose to include the words “kindness”, “diversity”, “peace”, “love” and “community” because they are my core principles and are always evident in the wonderful volunteer programmers at WMNF.

One of the ways we do that is by providing opportunities for local artists to be featured here at WMNF through various marketing mediums. WMNF ran a call for artist submissions to create a WMNF t-shirt design. Three designs were chosen for the fiscal year and these designs will be made into limited edition t-shirts and offered at the station as thank you gifts to supporters.
