Florida Governor Rick Scott is proposing keeping people younger than 21 from purchasing guns, keeping people with mental illnesses from purchasing guns and increasing the number of armed law enforcement officers in schools. His proposal differs from one put forward Friday by leaders in the GOP-dominated Legislature.

Pamela Goodman, president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, moderated a conference call with reporters Friday afternoon to both praise and criticize the proposals from Governor Scott and the state Legislative leaders.

Listen:

Goodman and the other gun safety advocates on the conference call with reporters prefer to revise and expand background checks and close what’s called the gun show loophole.

Dr. Julie Kessel is a psychiatrist and is with the League of Women Voters of Florida. Kessel criticizes the dubious link some politicians are making between gun violence and mental health.

Listen:

At least 300 students marched from Blake High School Friday afternoon to downtown Tampa’s Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park to call for gun control after the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School massacre last week. They chanted slogans like, “Hey, Hey NRA, how many kids have you killed today?”

The shooter was evaluated, what at least twice, and neither time was he detained or forced to turn in his firearms.

I suggest mental health professionals find a new line of work.
