The state’s Citizens Property Insurance Corp. was served with 4,711 lawsuits during the first six months of 2023, a decrease from the same period in 2022, according to information posted on the Citizens website.

Citizens averaged about 785 lawsuits a month from January through June, compared to an average of 985 during the first six months of 2022.

As of June 30, Citizens had 19,051 pending lawsuits, slightly less than the 19,139 cases at the same point in 2022, according to the information, which will go before the Citizens board’s Claims Committee on Sept. 12.

Citizens and other insurers have long blamed lawsuits for driving up costs in the industry. During a December special legislative session, lawmakers took a series of steps to try to help limit lawsuits.
