On WMNF’s MidPoint we tell you how to vote! Well, it’s really a conversation with Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer about how to make sure you are registered and that your vote counts.

The presidential preference primary election in Florida is coming up on March 15. But not everyone can vote — it’s only for registered Republicans and Democrats. These days more and more Floridians have registered for one of the many other parties or they’ve registered “No Party Affiliation.” But Latimer says they’re not completely out of luck since there time for them to change their registrations.

You must register by February 16 to be eligible to vote in this years’ Presidential Preference Primary.

Latimer points out that to change political party affiliation, submit a signed written notice including your date of birth or Florida Voter Registration Number or submit a new Florida Voter Registration Application form.

According to the Florida Division of Elections website, as of the end of November there were nearly 2.9 million people registered in Florida without a party affiliation and another third of a million in parties other than Republican or Democratic. We talked about the numbers in Hillsborough County.

Latimer went over how a voter can request a vote-by-mail ballot or  check her registration status online?

Hillsborough County will be using new voting equipment in every polling place that will alert a voter if she makes a mistake. There will still be an auditable paper trail?

The Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections office will be holding open houses so voters can ask questions and check out the new voting machines.

The 2016 primary election in Florida will be on August 30; the general election will be November 8.
