Whoever is elected Florida governor next month will select the next three state Supreme Court Justices; Monday the court said current Governor Rick Scott “exceeded his authority” when he began the process to name new justices.
WMNF News interviewed John Mills, the lawyer representing Common Cause and the League of Women Voters, which sued Scott saying he couldn’t fill vacancies that don’t yet exist.

Thank you for doing what is such an important story, the future of the judiciary in Florida. No small thing, given how much Rick Scott has politicized the judicial nominating commission. I read in the TBT that these merry Scott appointees are a majority and they won’t even glance at anyone who doesn’t pass the litmus test of far rightism. Once upon a time, when the late great Gov. Askew created these commissions, they were looked upon as being ahead of their time because they rose above nasty partisan politics to choose high caliber ethical lawyers for the Florida judiciary. PLEASE I hope everyone remembers that Rick Scott the crooked governor is the one who changed all that. This is the kind of story WMNF listeners really care about, and NOT how the Trumplodites rationalize their hero’s latest shenanigans. Most WMNF listeners do care about such un-sexy stuff as the environment, education, their fellow human beings and the future of Florida in these turbulent times. Most are reasonably well read and up on the issues. But keep on keeping those phone lines open for the Trumpists because you might get lucky one day. Meanwhile, we will stay on top of things like the murder and dismemberment of Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi and whether Trump finally will be forced to extricate us from that despotic Saudi Arabian regime.
