On a recent trip to Target, Life Elsewhere host, Norman B was struck by the overwhelming, if not overbearing cacophony of Halloween merchandise. The dizzying displays of giant spiders and skeletons and ghosts and witches and mountains of garish colored candy and mothers being harangued by their kids over which ready-made costume they wanted, prompted Norman to ask questions about this seemingly manufactured event. So, to help us understand the myths behind Halloween, we called upon Verlyn Flieger, author, editor, and professor in the Department of English at the University of Maryland at College Park. The adroit professor teaches courses in comparative mythology, medieval literature and the works of J. R. R. Tolkien.
Make sure you don’t miss Norman B’s conversation with Verlyn Flieger on the next edition of Life Elsewhere.
