Farmworkers and allies march for justice. By Lenka Davis / WMNF News. March 2013.

We hear from two farmworkers’ rights groups about a major march that’s coming to Tampa this week: the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) brings its Return to Human Rights Tour back to the bay area.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers has been pushing for fair working conditions for farmworkers for about a decade and a half. Many of you may remember their boycott against Taco Bell which successfully led to an increase in pay for tomato harvesters of a penny per pound. Since then there have been other victories in their Campaign for Fair Food, which we’ll hear about in a moment. Currently they’re hoping to convince holdouts Publix and Wendy’s to join the Fair Food Program.

Joining us in the studio is Roger Butterfield was with the Student/Farmworker Alliance. And on the phone, Patricia Cipollitti with the Alliance for Fair Food in Immokalee, Florida.

This from the Return to Human Rights Tour Facebook event page: “We will call on Wendy’s and Publix Supermarkets to make a real, verifiable commitment to protecting the fundamental human rights of farmworkers in their supply chains by joining the CIW’s Fair Food Program.”

The march is Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. From the Publix GreenWise Market at Hyde Park at 2401 West Azeele Street in Tampa, they’ll march to the Wendy’s on Kennedy Blvd.

Two years ago in St. Petersburg is where the Student Farmworker Alliance began the boycott against Wendy’s that the CIW joined later on.

Next Monday, April 3, we have special show lined up: it will be the eve of the 50th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech Beyond Vietnam – we’ll hear that speech recorded at Riverside Church in New York.
