Women earn less money than men; a panel discussion hosted by the Tiger Bay Club of Tampa Friday afternoon looked at why that is and what can be done about it.

Amy Hollyfield with the Tampa Bay Times and Politifact says that it’s true that on average women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, but the gap isn’t as pronounced when more variables are controlled for.

Susan Leisner was a plaintiff in a Title VII class-action lawsuit after she found out women were paid less than men at the telecommunications company where she worked.

The chair of the women and gender studies department at USF, Diane Price-Herndl, says there’s not just a gender pay equity gap, race is a factor as well.

Another panelist is the CEO of an eye care company who spoke about how her company ensures gender fairness in wages.
