Author living at poverty line shares her story in new book and Community event in Tampa asks could Ferguson happen here?

Today on Radioactivity, Rob Lorei speaks to a working woman, Linda Tirado who lives at the poverty line. When it comes to public discourse about the working poor- much of what we see on TV or hear on radio is a person’s opinion- or academic research- or a politician seeking to benefit electorally by what he or she says about the working poor. Linda Tirado wrote an essay last year called “Why I Make Terrible Decisions, or poverty thoughts”. The essay went viral and was read by more than six million people. She soon became a spokesperson for the working poor. At the same time she became a target for criticism. She’s expanded her original essay in a new book called HAND TO MOUTH: LIVING IN BOOTSTRAP AMERICA.

Moderated by NPR Media Critic Eric Deggans, a panel discussion will include Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Black Advisory Council President James Cole and Tampa Bay Times Columnist Ernest Hooper. The forum will focus on the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Mo., and media-police-community relations in Tampa Bay. Presented by the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists, George Edgecomb Bar Association and Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter, National Bar Association.
