Same-sex marriages begin in Miami-Dade; after midnight in all Florida counties

The first legal same-sex marriages in Florida took place Monday afternoon in Miami-Dade County; that came soon after a judge there said the county could immediately start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Monday morning Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel lifted a stay on her July ruling that Florida’s same-sex marriage ban violates equal protections under the U.S. Constitution.

Same-sex marriages were expected to begin statewide after midnight, when a separate ruling by a federal judge takes effect, covering all 67 Florida counties.

For a look at what this means, WMNF News spoke Monday morning with Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida.
