Many Pinellas ballots have name of candidate who dropped out

Many Pinellas County residents will be voting on ballots that have the name of a candidate who is no longer running.

Ed Jany dropped out of the race for Congressional District 13.

WMNF interviewed Nancy Whitlock, elections administrator with the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections office.

“We received the certified ballot list of candidates from the (Florida) Division of Elections and that included Ed Jany as one of the candidates for (Florida’s) Congressional District 13. We did not receive any additional notice from the Division until September 22 (2014), which is when we received a copy of the letter that Mr. Jany had submitted to the Division of Elections that was date-stamped September 17. And at that point, they told us he had withdrawn. We had already printed ballots. So at that point we started inserting a notice about Mr. Jany’s withdrawl from the race and that any vote for him would not be counted. So, we also sent another a news release that day, on September 22. And we posted on our Website. We’ll have notices in the early voting locations and we’ll have notices in every polling place on Election Day in that district. So that voters will be aware that any vote for Mr. Jany will not be counted because he has withdrawn . If someone request a mail ballot and they made a mistake and want to request a replacement ballot, they can do so by giving us a call at (727) 464-VOTE . However if they have already mailed their ballot to us, they cannot get another ballot at that point.”

The incumbent in Florida’s 13th Congressional District is Republican David Jolly. Libertarian Lucas Overby and write-in candidate Michael Levinson are also running.

Early voting begins October 20; Election Day is four weeks from Tuesday, November 4.
