Fire and Fury…….the hour of reckoning is at hand…….
All this is happening on the 72nd anniversary of the U.S. dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. “When will they learn? When will they ever learn?” (Pete Seeger) Flowers don’t make it to the graveyards any more, they are already being burned to ash by climate change. I could say a lot more, but we have two outstanding guests tomorrow who will talk about nuclear Armageddon and what we need to be doing about it.
MEDEA BENJAMIN, co-founder of the women-led peace group CODEPINK and the co-founder of the human rights group Global Exchange on the show the discuss her thoughts. She has been an advocate for social justice for more than 40 years. Described as “one of America’s most committed — and most effective — fighters for human rights” by New York Newsday, and “one of the high profile leaders of the peace movement” by the Los Angeles Times, just returned from South Korea. I am anxious to get her insights.
MS. RAY ACHESON, Director of Reaching Critical Will, the disarmament programme of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.. She provides analysis, research, and advocacy across a range of disarmament and arms control issues. Ray leads WILPF’s work on stigmatising war and violence, including by campaigning for a nuclear weapon ban treaty and challenging the arms trade and the use of explosive weapons and armed drones. She will talk not only about nuclear disarmament, but the delegitimization of nuclear weapons as protective devices for security. They have done a great deal of work on the gender effects of wars and armaments. Not only do women suffer disproportionally from the effects of war, but the very nature of war and weapons enhances the stereotype of masculine superiority and women’s weakness and inferiority.
Boys with toys will be boys, And If the crazies of the world unite we are in deep trouble!
Tune into From a Woman’s POV Thursday at 10 am.
