How do context and persuasion affect the ability of presidents to achieve their goals?

One of the top presidential scholars in the country, George Edwards , spoke Thursday night at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg. Host Rob Lorei interviewed him about the Trump presidency. Edwards has authored many articles and written or edited 25 books on American politics and public policy making. His latest book, Predicting the Presidency: The Potential of Persuasive Leadership shows how the answers to a few questions about the context of a presidency can predict a president’s success in winning support for his initiatives. Edwards is a leading scholar of American politics, particularly of the American Presidency, authoring or editing 25 books and more than 80 articles and essays. He grew up in St. Petersburg, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin—Madison.

Edwards III is a University Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Jordan Chair in Presidential Studies at Texas A&M University as well as the Editor of the Presidential Studies Quarterly and Distinguished Fellow at the Rothermere American Institute at the University of Oxford.
